God loves people. He established the church in order that people can experience transformation. He has decided, for His own good reasons, that people are best transformed through authentic relationships. In authentic relationships we discover who we really are and how much transformation we still require. In authentic relationships we “do the work of the ministry” and build up one another in truth.
Our “Home Groups” were developed as a structure to encourage all of us to develop those kinds of authentic, encouraging relationships. This seems to be the model that the early church practiced (for several reasons), and it is a practice that we see throughout the scriptures, including Jesus choosing the twelve.
But life is so busy! For most of us, adding another weekly event on the calendar just seems to be impossible. We want to encourage you to remember the truths out of Ephesians 4. Growing in Christ (transformation, maturing) is not optional for believers. We are both designed and called to grow (sanctification), to learn how to “walk worthy of the calling with which we have been called.” God has placed in us a hunger for Him, to know Him and to live in fellowship with Him, which is what spiritual training is all about. And frankly, this is to be the priority of our lives.
The Home Groups are not separate, individual Bible studies. Rather, they are linked with the weekly sermon and worship service. We will review the same passage of Scripture that was taught in the sermon, often delving deeper into areas not covered in detail by the preacher. This approach gives us repeated exposure to the material covered and helps us to be hearers and doers of the Word.
